Schlüchtern sits in the upper Kinzig valley in eastern Hesse, where the Vogelsberg, the Spessart and the Rhön come close to one another. From above, the town takes the shape of its valley: a compact centre on the valley floor, residential streets climbing the lower slopes, and forest pressing in wherever the ground gets steep.
The town grew up around a Benedictine monastery founded in the early Middle Ages, and the former abbey buildings still anchor the historic core.
