Semarang, capital of Central Java, is divided by its terrain into two distinct parts. The lower city spreads across the flat coastal plain along the Java Sea and holds the port, the old town and dense commercial districts. Inland, the upper city climbs into hills, where roads twist around the slopes and neighbourhoods look back over the coast. On a map the change in street pattern is striking.
Kota Lama, the old colonial quarter near the harbour, has a compact grid of streets and canals. Nearby stands Lawang Sewu, the former railway headquarters known for its many doors. The city is also home to Sam Poo Kong, a temple complex associated with the fifteenth-century admiral Zheng He. The low-lying coast has long struggled with flooding and land subsidence.
A Semarang map poster shows the two flood canals, the West and East Banjir Kanal, running straight towards the sea on either side of the centre. It also shows the port basins, the dense grain of the lower town and the looser, contour-led streets of the hills. Every line on the map shows how closely land and water are bound together here.

Two engineered flood canals run straight through the lower city to the Java Sea. They frame the centre with long lines of water.
South of the centre the land rises, and the streets begin to curve along the slopes. This creates a looser, more organic pattern than on the coast below.
