Serra Preta is a municipality in the interior of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, in the drier country inland from the Recôncavo. The name means black range and points to the higher ground nearby. On a map the town centre is compact, a small grid of streets with roads leaving in several directions across a largely rural municipality.
Outside the town, open land dominates the map: farms, pasture, scattered hamlets and unpaved roads that follow the lie of the ground.
