Shangluo lies in south-eastern Shaanxi, on the southern side of the Qinling Mountains, the range that divides northern and southern China. The urban centre, Shangzhou District, occupies a narrow valley along the Dan River, and the city's shape is set almost entirely by the terrain. On a map it appears as a long, slender band of streets between steep, empty slopes on either side.
Within that band the layout is practical: main roads run parallel to the river, with bridges crossing at intervals and short side streets climbing toward the valley walls.
