Sibolga faces the Indian Ocean from the west coast of North Sumatra, on the shore of Tapian Nauli Bay. The land behind it rises steeply almost immediately. On a map the town is a thin ribbon of streets squeezed between the water and the hills, several blocks deep in places and just a single road wide in others.
The bay shapes everything. Its curving shoreline sets the line of the main streets, and small islands lie offshore in the sheltered water.
