Soltau lies in the Lüneburg Heath, between Hamburg, Bremen and Hanover. From above, its centre is a compact cluster of streets along the small Böhme river, while wide areas of forest, farmland and heath stretch out in every direction, crossed by roads and the motorway to the west.
