Songyang lies at the southern foot of Mount Song in central Henan, in the area of Dengfeng, a landscape layered with early religious and scholarly sites. Mount Song is one of the Five Great Mountains of China, and the name Songyang, the sunny side of Song, describes the town's position. On a map the urban streets fill the valley floor while the mountain rises immediately to the north.
The area is known for the Songyang Academy, one of the celebrated academies of classical Chinese learning, which belongs to a group of historic monuments around Dengfeng listed by UNESCO. The Shaolin Temple lies in the same mountain range. These sites sit where the plain begins to climb, and the roads that lead to them trace the first curves of the hills.
A Songyang map poster contrasts a modern town grid with the irregular contours of mountain valleys. The streets are dense and orderly in the centre and loosen toward the foothills, where roads bend and branch to follow the terrain. It is a map for people drawn to Chinese history and philosophy, and for those who call the town home.
The Songshan range rises directly north of the town. On the poster, roads thin out and curve as they climb, marking the shift from plain to mountain.
This historic academy of learning, now part of a UNESCO-listed group of monuments, stands at the foot of the mountain on the northern side of town.
The central streets form a regular, compact network on the valley floor, a dense counterpoint to the open, winding roads of the surrounding hills.
