Stara Zagora has one of the most regular street plans in Bulgaria. The town was burned during the Russo-Turkish War in 1877 and then rebuilt on a new grid of straight, parallel streets, and that orderly chequerboard still defines the centre today. To the north the land rises toward the wooded Sredna Gora hills. To the south the city opens onto the wide Thracian Plain.
The city stands on ancient ground. As the Roman town of Augusta Traiana it was an important centre in Thrace, and the remains of its forum and a small theatre lie in the middle of the modern city. Stara Zagora is also known for its Neolithic Dwellings museum, which preserves houses about eight thousand years old, and for the linden trees that line many of its streets.
A Stara Zagora map poster makes the grid its main subject. The straight streets cross at right angles in a clear rhythm, parks and the open ground of the ancient forum break the pattern, and the slopes to the north add softer lines. Printed in black and white, it has an almost architectural precision that suits the city's planned character.

Roman remains, including the forum and a small theatre, sit in the heart of the modern city. They form an open space inside the grid that marks the ancient core.
North of the centre, the large hillside park of Ayazmoto climbs toward Sredna Gora, its winding paths contrasting with the straight streets below.
