Ko e mape
Stevenage was designated in 1946 as the first New Town after the Second World War, and its map still shows the plan. Self-contained neighbourhoods, each with its own shops and schools, are linked by broad distributor roads and a remarkable number of roundabouts. Between them lie green wedges and a separate network of cycleways and underpasses that was ambitious for its time.
At the centre is the Town Square, opened in the late 1950s as one of the first purpose-built pedestrian shopping precincts in the country, with its clock tower still a local landmark. To the north, the Old Town keeps the gentle curve of a High Street on the historic Great North Road. It is a reminder that a market town stood here long before the planners arrived.
A Stevenage map poster makes the logic of the place easy to read: the A1(M) along the western edge, the railway beside the centre, the lakes of Fairlands Valley Park, and the looping residential closes inside each neighbourhood. It is a portrait of mid-century planning with an older town tucked inside it.

North of the new centre, the older core follows the line of the historic coaching road. Its narrower, more organic pattern contrasts sharply with the planned districts around it.
A long green valley of lakes and open lawns runs between the eastern neighbourhoods, adding water and soft curves to a network otherwise shaped by roads.

Ko e ha Stevenage
Stevenage divides opinion, and that is part of its appeal. People who grew up here know every underpass and roundabout by heart. Seen from above, the town shows an order that is hard to notice at street level, and it makes a surprisingly striking picture.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a family name, a neighbourhood or the year you moved in, and adjust the coordinates line. Pick one of five styles, from Classic black & white to Blueprint, which suits the planned layout especially well.
