Sukhinichi is a small town in the south-west of Kaluga Oblast, and its map is dominated by the railway. It grew as a junction, and the lines that meet here cut across the town in long, straight strokes, with sidings, yards and depots spread out beside them. Residential streets fill the spaces between the tracks.
Most of the town is low-rise: wooden and brick houses on long plots, with gardens that give the map a fine-grained texture. The street grid is fairly regular but split into sections by the railway, and crossings and bridges tie the parts together. The junction gave the town strategic importance during the Second World War, and the area saw heavy fighting in the winter of 1942.
