Svay Rieng is the capital of Svay Rieng province in southeastern Cambodia, a region that juts into Vietnam and is bordered by it on three sides. The town lies on the Waiko River, and on a map its streets gather along the water, with a compact centre close to the bank and residential areas spreading out along the roads leading away from it.
Around the town the land is almost perfectly flat, and the map fills with the fine, repeating pattern of rice paddies, irrigation channels and small villages strung along roads and waterways. National Road 1, the main route between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City, passes through the town, and the busy Bavet border crossing lies further to the southeast.
Because of its shape on the map, the province became known as the Parrot's Beak, and it gained that name during the Vietnam War era. Today Svay Rieng is a quiet administrative and market town. A Svay Rieng map poster shows it as it appears from above: a river town in open lowland, defined by water, road and field.
The river winds through town in slow meanders, and the central streets follow its banks. The water is the main organising line of the map.
The main highway between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City crosses the town, a straight, strong line cutting through the finer grain of local streets.
Rice fields surround the town in a dense pattern of small plots and channels, a delicate texture that fills the outer edges of the poster.

Ko e ha Svay Rieng
For Cambodians from the southeast, and for anyone who has travelled the road between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City, Svay Rieng is a familiar stop. Its map is quiet and balanced: a river, a road and the fields between them.
