Ko e mape
Syktyvkar, the capital of the Komi Republic, stands where the Sysola and Vychegda rivers meet in the northeast of European Russia. Until 1930 the city was called Ust-Sysolsk, a name meaning the mouth of the Sysola. On a map the rivers curve around the edge of the city, with wide floodplains, oxbow lakes and side channels spreading across the lowland.
The historic centre sits on higher ground above the Sysola, laid out in a regular grid of streets with Stefanovskaya Square at its heart. Around it, Soviet-era districts of apartment blocks extend in larger rectangles. Industrial areas, including a large timber and paper complex, occupy the outskirts, and beyond them the taiga begins almost immediately.
Syktyvkar is the cultural centre of the Komi people. Their language, Komi, is an official language of the republic alongside Russian, and the city's own name is Komi. A Syktyvkar map poster shows a compact grid bordered by winding water and forest, a clear portrait of a northern city shaped by its rivers.
The Sysola joins the Vychegda just beyond the city. Together they form a network of channels and oxbow lakes that dominates one side of the map.
The old centre follows a regular grid of streets around Stefanovskaya Square, a clear, orderly pattern within the looser outer districts.
Low meadows along the rivers remain largely unbuilt. They create wide open areas that contrast with the dense streets and give the city a distinct edge.
