Takaoka lies in the west of Toyama Prefecture, on a plain that slopes gently down to Toyama Bay. Maeda Toshinaga founded it as a castle town in 1609, and the old centre on the map still shows that origin. Orderly blocks surround the moated castle park, and the Oyabe and Shō rivers flow past toward the coast.
Takaoka has been a centre of metal casting for four centuries and produces the great majority of Japan's bronze and copperware, from bells to temple fittings. The city's bronze Great Buddha is among the best known in Japan, and Zuiryū-ji, the Zen temple built in memory of Maeda Toshinaga, is designated a National Treasure.
A Takaoka map poster reveals the layers of the city. The broad rectangle of Kojō Park and its castle moats sits beside the older merchant and casting quarters. Rail lines and the Manyōsen tram line head out toward the coast, and the shoreline along Amaharashi gives the northern edge a clean sweep.
The former castle grounds, now a public park, keep their wide water-filled moats. On the map they form a large, well-defined shape near the city centre.
This historic district of foundries and workshops has narrow streets and closely set buildings. It is the birthplace of Takaoka's metalworking tradition.
The shoreline of Toyama Bay runs along the northern edge of the city. Views from here can take in the Tateyama mountains across the water on clear days.
