Branching lanes
Roads divide again and again into narrow lanes that serve individual houses. The result is a dense, tree-like network, typical of rural Kerala and full of fine detail on paper.

Tanalur is a panchayat in Malappuram district, in northern Kerala, a short way inland from the Arabian Sea. As in much of coastal Kerala, there is no sharp line between town and village. From above, houses line an intricate web of roads and lanes among coconut palms and garden plots, so settlement spreads evenly across the land.
The low, well-watered land is marked by paddy fields, ponds and small streams, which break up the pattern of homesteads with open, irregular shapes. Main roads carry traffic toward the nearby towns of Tanur and Tirur, while smaller lanes wind between house compounds. The result is a street map that is dense yet entirely unplanned.
A Tānālūr map poster reflects the particular geography of Malabar, where settlement follows land and water rather than a grid and almost every plot is either lived on or farmed. In monochrome, the lanes become a fine, branching network, and the fields and ponds form calm pale spaces within it.
Roads divide again and again into narrow lanes that serve individual houses. The result is a dense, tree-like network, typical of rural Kerala and full of fine detail on paper.
Low-lying fields and small ponds break up the settlement. Their open shapes give the composition rhythm and breathing space.
The Arabian Sea lies a short way west, and the land flattens as it nears the shore. It is part of the coastal plain that runs the length of Malabar.
