Tanjong Malim sits at the southern tip of Perak, where the Bernam River forms the boundary with Selangor. The town lies between hills rising to the east and flatter land to the west, and both the railway line and the old trunk road pass through it, giving the map two strong north–south lines alongside the curves of the river.
The town is best known as home to Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, which grew out of the Sultan Idris Training College founded in 1922 and long regarded as a cradle of Malay teachers and writers. Nearby, Proton City was developed around an automobile plant, adding a planned district of wide roads to the older town.
