Taonan is a county-level city in Baicheng, in western Jilin Province, on the plains where northeast China's farmland gives way to the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. The land is almost completely flat, and the town has been laid out on a broad, regular grid that reads very clearly from above.
The Tao'er River runs nearby, and its meandering channel and floodplain are the main exception to all the straight lines. Taonan grew as a railway town in the early twentieth century, and the rail lines are still clear features, running across the plain and bringing the grid to an edge on one side.
