Telšiai is the main town of Samogitia, the historic region of northwestern Lithuania. It lies along the eastern shore of Lake Mastis, and the town's streets rise from the water up a series of hills. From above, the lake is the dominant shape, a long body of water with the town arranged along one side and parkland and paths along the shore.
Telšiai is the seat of the Samogitian diocese, and its cathedral stands on a hill above the lake. The town also held a famous yeshiva before the Second World War, known across the Jewish world. Local tradition says Telšiai, like Rome, is built on seven hills, and the uneven layout of the streets supports the claim.
