Tha Mai lies in Chanthaburi Province on Thailand's eastern seaboard, in the lowlands between inland hills and the Gulf of Thailand. The town's streets form a modest centre along the main roads. Beyond them the map breaks into a patchwork of orchards, ponds and small waterways heading towards the coast, where the land turns into a mix of estuaries and aquaculture ponds.
Chanthaburi is known across Thailand for its fruit, especially durian, mangosteen and rambutan, and for its long-established gem trade. The countryside around Tha Mai reflects the first of these.
