Ko e mape
Thatcham lies just east of Newbury in West Berkshire, spread along the Kennet valley. The A4, the old Bath Road, runs through the town from east to west. North of it, residential streets climb gently in a mixture of older lanes and larger post-war estates. To the south the land drops toward the valley floor, where the pattern changes completely.
There the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal run side by side, and a series of lakes, left behind by gravel extraction, now form reedbeds and nature reserves. On the map the valley is a chain of water shapes and wetland. Thatcham also claims to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Britain, with evidence of occupation going back thousands of years.
A Thatcham map poster works best with the frame reaching south to the valley, so that the canal, river and lakes balance the dense streets to the north. The result is a map of two halves, town and water. In black and white it has a pleasing, almost architectural symmetry.
The canal runs along the valley south of town, close beside the River Kennet. The two form parallel water lines that cross the whole map.
Former gravel pits have become a cluster of lakes and reedbeds, rounded water shapes that give the southern part of the map a soft, open texture.
The A4 runs east to west through the middle of the town, a long historic route that divides the residential north from the valley south.
