Tietê lies in the interior of São Paulo state, on the Tietê River, which gives the town its name. On a map the river is the defining line. It curves past the town, and the street grid comes right up to its bank. Bridges carry the roads across to the other side and on towards Piracicaba, Sorocaba and the rest of the region.
The Tietê River itself is an unusual feature. It rises close to the Atlantic coast but flows inland, away from the sea, across the state towards the Paraná River. That journey made it an important route into the interior in colonial times, and towns like this one grew along its course.
