Ko e mape
Tomioka is in southwestern Gunma Prefecture, where the Kabura River flows east through a valley on its way to the Kanto plain. The town centre sits on the terraces above the river. Its streets form a compact, mostly orthogonal network, with farmland and scattered neighbourhoods around them. Further west, the land rises sharply towards the jagged peaks around Mount Myōgi.
The town is known for the Tomioka Silk Mill. The government founded it in 1872 as a model factory to modernise Japan's silk production, using French expertise. The long brick buildings are still standing, and in 2014 the mill and related sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The Tomioka map poster shows how compact the town is. A tidy centre sits close to the river, the mill grounds form a distinct block within it, and roads lead out across the valley towards the mountains. The Kabura adds a single flowing line that gives the whole print its direction.
The mill complex takes up a distinct rectangular block near the town centre. Its large footprint stands out among the smaller residential streets around it.
The river runs along the south side of the town and bends through the valley. It gives the poster a strong horizontal line and a natural edge.
Roads follow the valley east towards the plain and west into the hills. They stretch the town's outline along the river corridor.
