Kumagaya lies in northern Saitama on the open Kanto Plain, with the Arakawa River running along its southern side and the Tone River not far to the north. On a map the city is almost entirely level, so the street pattern is shaped less by hills than by the rail lines, the river embankments and the old roads that once connected Edo with the interior.
The city is well known in Japan for its summer heat. In July 2018 Kumagaya recorded 41.1 degrees Celsius, then the highest temperature ever measured in the country, and the city has embraced the reputation. It is also home to Kumagaya Rugby Stadium, which hosted matches during the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
A Kumagaya map poster reads as a study in plain-country planning. The station and the Joetsu Shinkansen and Takasaki lines cut a strong diagonal through town, the Arakawa's wide floodplain lies open to the south, and residential blocks and farmland fill the ground in between with a fine, even texture.
The broad Arakawa riverbed, with its embankments and open banks, forms a wide pale band along the south of the city, giving the map a strong natural edge.
Kumagaya Station sits on the Takasaki Line and the Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen, and the tracks draw a clean diagonal line through the centre of the street grid.
With almost no relief, the streets spread evenly in every direction, and the transition from town blocks to rice fields shows clearly around the city's edges.

Ko e ha Kumagaya
For residents, a map of Kumagaya records the everyday routes between home, station and river. For rugby fans or anyone who has spent a hot summer here, it is an understated keepsake that says a great deal without any decoration.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a match date, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. A free watermarked preview lets you check the layout before buying the $9 HD files or ordering a printed poster.
