Toyoshina lies in the Azumino basin in Nagano Prefecture, a broad, flat valley floor beneath the steep eastern face of the Northern Alps. It was once a town in its own right and became part of the city of Azumino in 2005. From above, the area is a patchwork of rice paddies, orchards and houses, crossed by straight roads and slowly curving rivers.
Water defines this landscape. Streams from the Alps feed a network of irrigation channels that has supported rice farming across the basin for generations, and several rivers meet on the valley floor. Clear spring water is a point of local pride throughout Azumino. On a map, the neatly divided fields and the lines of the channels give Toyoshina an unusually precise texture.
A Toyoshina map poster captures the quiet order of rural Japan: fields and channels in fine geometric pieces, rail lines and roads crossing the basin, and small clusters of houses. It is a thoughtful choice for residents, returning visitors and anyone drawn to the mountain valleys of central Nagano and the Alps beyond.
Rectangular rice fields cover much of the valley floor in a regular mosaic. It reads beautifully in black and white and gives the map a distinctive sense of scale.
Channels carry water across the fields in long, deliberate lines. This farming system was built up over generations and is still central to life in the Azumino basin.
The Northern Alps rise sharply to the west, where the flat basin ends against their slopes. A wider crop shows the change from farmland to mountain.
