Ubon Ratchathani is the capital of Thailand's easternmost province, in the lower Isan region near the borders with Laos and Cambodia. The city lies on the northern bank of the Mun River, which curves broadly along its southern edge. On a map the street grid spreads north from the water across level ground.
Across the river lies Warin Chamrap, reached by bridges, so an Ubon Ratchathani map poster shows two urban areas facing each other over a wide, meandering band of water. Near the old centre, Thung Si Mueang, a large public park, opens a clear rectangle among the blocks. Temples and markets are scattered through the surrounding streets.
The city is known across Thailand for its Candle Festival, held at the start of Buddhist Lent, when elaborately carved wax sculptures are paraded through the streets. The province also has a strong forest-monastery tradition. Beyond the city, the Mun continues east to join the Mekong, through flat, watery land dotted with ponds and rice fields.
The river sweeps along the southern side of the city in wide meanders, and its curves are the most prominent natural feature on the print.
This large park near the centre forms a clean open rectangle in the street grid and hosts the main displays of the Candle Festival each year.
On the opposite bank, the twin town of Warin Chamrap, home to the railway station, balances the composition and ties both sides of the river together.
