Valls is the capital of the Alt Camp county in Tarragona province, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean coast. On a map, its old quarter shows as a dense knot of narrow, irregular streets around the church and main squares, surrounded by wider streets from later growth and then by the farmland of the Camp plain.
