Ko e mape
Vanier sits just east of downtown Ottawa, across the Rideau River from Sandy Hill and Lowertown. It was a separate city, first called Eastview and renamed in 1969 after Governor General Georges Vanier, until it was amalgamated with Ottawa in 2001. On a map it is a small, dense neighbourhood with a tight grid of residential streets.
The Rideau River forms its western edge in a gentle curve, with parkland along the bank. Montreal Road, the main commercial street, runs through the centre from west to east. Vanier has long been one of the main francophone communities in Ottawa, and its churches, schools and community institutions reflect that heritage.
A Vanier map poster shows a neighbourhood with a strong, compact identity. The river curve, the regular blocks and the straight line of Montreal Road form a clear composition, and the edges of the larger city frame it. It is a map for people who have lived here, and for anyone who knows Ottawa beyond the Parliament and the canal.
The river bends along the western side of Vanier, separating it from central Ottawa. Parkland along the bank softens this edge on the map.
The main commercial street runs straight through the neighbourhood. It is the strongest line in the street pattern, and shops and services gather along it.
Short, closely spaced streets form a dense grid of houses and small apartment buildings, giving Vanier its compact, urban texture.
