Varkaus lies in North Savo, in the heart of the Finnish Lakeland, on the waterway between Lake Unnukka and the Haukivesi lake system. The name is linked to the old word for a stretch of rapids. Today the town is organised around the passages where water flows between the lakes, now controlled by the Taipale and Varkaus canals.
Industry defines much of the map. Large mill sites occupy the waterfront, where the paper and pulp industry and engineering shaped the town from the nineteenth century onward. Residential areas spread across the islands and peninsulas around them, linked by bridges. Visitors may know Varkaus for its Mechanical Music Museum.
A Varkaus map poster is as much about water as land. Lakes fill a large part of the frame, and the streets appear in irregular pieces between shorelines. Bridges and canal locks connect them into a single town. It is a fine example of how Lakeland geography shapes a Finnish town plan.
Unnukka and the Haukivesi waters meet at Varkaus. Large expanses of open water surround the town and create the defining shapes of the poster.
The Taipale and Varkaus canals carry boats past the old rapids. They appear on the map as short, precise straight lines between the lakes.
Large industrial plots sit at the water's edge, next to the old rapids. They form broad, simple blocks among the finer residential streets.

For people who grew up with the mill and the lakes, or boaters who have passed through the Taipale locks, this map is instantly familiar. It is a calm, water-filled composition that suits Nordic interiors well.
