Viratnagar, historically known as Bairat, lies north-east of Jaipur among the low, rocky ridges of the Aravalli range. Tradition identifies it with Viratnagar, the capital of the Matsya kingdom in the Mahabharata. According to the epic, the Pandavas spent the final year of their exile here in disguise, and local sites are still linked to their story.
The area is also important to archaeology. Excavations on the nearby hills revealed the remains of a Buddhist monastery and a circular temple, and an edict of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka was found here. On a map, the modern town sits in a valley basin. Its irregular streets gather at the centre, hemmed in by ridges that appear as open, empty ground.
A Viratnagar map poster frames that setting clearly: a dense old core, roads leaving through gaps in the hills and the surrounding uplands that have sheltered the town for so long. It is a meaningful piece for people from the area and for anyone drawn to the deep history of Rajasthan and the Indian epics.
The town occupies a basin enclosed by rocky Aravalli ridges, which leave broad empty spaces on the map and give the settlement a naturally framed shape.
Narrow, irregular lanes cluster at the centre. They are the product of long, organic growth rather than planning and form the densest part of the drawing.
Routes leave town through breaks in the ridges, linking Viratnagar with Jaipur and the wider plains, their curves shaped by the rugged terrain.
