Warstein lies in the Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the northern edge of the Arnsberg Forest nature park. On the map the town stretches along narrow valleys, with streets following the watercourses and forested hills pressing in from every side.
The name is widely known through the Warsteiner brewery, one of Germany's largest privately owned breweries, whose site is part of the town. The area is also shaped by limestone: large quarries cut into the hills, and the Bilstein Cave, a show cave in the woods nearby, draws visitors to the karst landscape.
