Whyalla lies on the eastern Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, on the western shore of Spencer Gulf. It is one of the state's major regional cities, built around heavy industry. From above, the town has curving suburban streets laid out in planned neighbourhoods, with the steelworks occupying a large site along the coast.
Iron ore from the Middleback Ranges to the west has long been at the heart of Whyalla's economy. The city also built ships during the Second World War, and the former HMAS Whyalla now stands on land as part of the Maritime Museum. Around the town, the map opens into dry, sparsely settled country.
A Whyalla map poster shows a city defined by its shoreline and its industry. The long edge of the gulf, the large-scale blocks of the steelworks and the tidy suburban streets create a composition with strong contrast and a clear sense of place.
The coastline of the gulf runs along the town's eastern side. In black and white, the water forms a broad, calm expanse beside the city.
The steelworks covers a large area near the shore, with rail lines and wide internal roads. It is the most distinctive block on the poster.
Residential areas are laid out in curving streets and crescents. Their regular patterns contrast neatly with the industrial land and the open scrub.

Whyalla shaped the working lives of many families in South Australia. A map of the city is a reminder of home, of shifts at the steelworks or of a childhood by the gulf, and it makes an easy gift.
