Xinguara lies in the south of Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon region, between the basins of the Xingu and Araguaia rivers. That position gave the town its name, which combines the two. It is a relatively young town that grew up along a main highway, and its map shows a regular grid of wide, straight streets set out across fairly flat land, with the highway running along one side.
The economy of the area is closely tied to cattle ranching. The land around the town is largely pasture that has been cleared from forest over recent decades. Xinguara serves as a commercial and service centre for a large rural area, with a steady flow of trucks along the roads.
A Xinguara map poster has the clarity of a planned town. Evenly spaced blocks form a compact rectangle, the highway draws a strong line past it, and the land around is open and uncluttered. In black and white, the design reads like a modernist plan, simple and direct, set in the vast spaces of the Brazilian interior.
Straight, evenly spaced streets and uniform blocks show the planned layout of a town founded in the late twentieth century.
The main road runs past the town, lined with businesses and service stations and linking Xinguara to the rest of southern Pará.
Open land stretches out on all sides, which gives the compact urban grid plenty of white space in the frame.
