Ko e mape
Tucuruí lies in the southeast of Pará, on the Tocantins River in the Brazilian Amazon. Water and one enormous structure dominate the map: the Tucuruí Dam, which crosses the river just upstream from the town. Below the dam the river runs broad and braided, with islands and sandbanks. Above it the reservoir spreads into a maze of flooded valleys and forested islands.
The dam was built in the 1970s and 1980s and is one of the largest hydroelectric plants in Brazil. Its reservoir covers a very large area of former forest. A system of locks now lets boats pass the dam, reconnecting stretches of the Tocantins that were cut off from each other for decades. The town grew alongside the construction, and planned districts were built for workers and engineers.
The streets of Tucuruí run close to the riverbank. The older town lies near the water, and newer districts extend inland toward the highway. A Tucuruí map poster shows the town in its full setting, with urban blocks, the dam and a huge body of water side by side on the sheet.
The dam crosses the Tocantins just upstream from the town. Its long straight line across the river is one of the most striking man-made shapes on any map of the Amazon.
Above the dam, the reservoir spreads through flooded valleys and leaves many islands and a complex, branching shoreline that fills the southern part of a wider print.
Below the dam, the river widens and divides around islands and sandbanks. It runs along the edge of the town and gives the poster a strong natural axis.
