Ko e mape
Belém stands on a peninsula at the edge of the Amazon estuary, where the Guamá River meets Guajará Bay. Water frames the city on the west and south, and the old centre sits right at the corner where the two meet. From there, long avenues run inland to the northeast, many lined with mango trees that shade the streets and gave the city one of its nicknames.
Founded in 1616 around the Forte do Presépio, Belém became a key port for the Amazon trade. The Ver-o-Peso market on the waterfront is one of the oldest in Brazil, and every October the Círio de Nazaré procession fills the streets with pilgrims. In 2025 the city hosted the COP30 United Nations climate conference.
A Belém map poster captures the meeting of dense colonial streets, long straight avenues and wide river water. The irregular shoreline, the islands scattered across the bay and the regular blocks of the inner districts give the composition a natural balance between the formal and the untamed.

The historic core around the fort and the Ver-o-Peso market, where narrow streets meet the water at the corner of bay and river.
