Ko e mape
Breves sits on the southwestern side of Marajó, the vast island at the mouth of the Amazon in the state of Pará. It is the most populous town of the Marajó archipelago, and its map is shaped by water rather than roads: the town faces a river channel, and much of the surrounding area is forest and floodplain crossed by waterways.
The Breves straits, a maze of narrow channels, carry river traffic between Belém and the main course of the Amazon, so boats rather than highways connect the town to the rest of the region. The urban grid is compact, running back from the waterfront, and its edges quickly dissolve into green, which on a map becomes unbroken open space.
A Breves map poster shows a place defined by its relationship to the river. The street grid sits against a winding line of water, with channels branching through the surrounding land, a composition that feels quite different from a road-based town and suits anyone connected to life on the Amazon estuary.
The town meets its river channel along a long waterfront where streets stop at the water, giving the poster a firm natural boundary on one side.
Narrow channels known as the Breves straits wind through the region, carrying boats between Belém and the Amazon and appearing on the map as fine, meandering lines.
Behind the waterfront, a tight grid of streets forms the town proper. Its small size against the surrounding floodplain gives the map a striking sense of scale.

Ko e ha Breves
Breves is reached by boat, and people who grew up there often remember arrivals and departures along the river. A map of the town and its channels keeps that geography close, and its unusual shape makes a distinctive piece on any wall.
