Yajiang lies in the hilly countryside of Chongqing municipality, far from the dense centre of the city. The terrain here is broken into ridges, valleys and slopes, and towns grow wherever the ground allows. On the map, streets bend around the hills and run along valleys, and there are very few straight lines.
The farmland around the town is terraced in many places, following the contours of the slopes. In a detailed drawing, this gives the land a layered, wavy texture.
