Yefremov sits in the south of Tula Oblast, where the Krasivaya Mecha river cuts a winding course across open steppe-like farmland. On the map, the town lies mainly on one bank, and its central streets follow a fairly regular grid that ends abruptly at the river's edge and the slopes above it.
The town began in the seventeenth century as a fortified post on Muscovy's southern frontier, and its plan still reflects the orderly layout typical of provincial Russian towns. Industrial areas and railway lines spread out to the edges, while the older centre stays close to the bends of the river, where the valley gives the map some relief.
The writer Ivan Bunin lived here for a time, and the house connected with him is now a museum. A Yefremov map poster shows a modest, legible town: straight streets, a meandering river and fields stretching away on every side, all of which come through clearly in a minimalist print.
The river's name means 'Beautiful Mecha', and it winds past the town in loose loops. Its curves contrast with the straight lines of the streets above.
The older core follows a mostly rectangular street pattern, typical of planned provincial towns, which gives the middle of the poster an ordered, almost graphic texture.
Farmland and open land ring the town, so the built-up area appears as a compact island with roads and rail lines leading out across the empty space.
