Yihe is a town in the northeastern part of Chongqing Municipality, in the mountainous country north of the Yangtze that is part of the wider Three Gorges region. The landscape is one of steep ridges, deep valleys and terraced slopes. The town's streets settle into whatever level ground the terrain allows.
From above, the result is an irregular settlement rather than a grid. Buildings crowd along the main roads, while side streets climb a short way up the slopes before giving way to terraced fields and woodland. Roads out of town wind through the hills in long curves, following the contours toward neighbouring towns and villages.
