Ko e mape
Zhaoxing is a Dong village in Liping County, in south-eastern Guizhou, one of the largest Dong settlements in China. It lies in a narrow valley between terraced hills, and from above, the village is a long, dense cluster of wooden houses stretched out along a stream. Paths follow the water, and the steep green slopes rise on both sides.
The village is known for its five drum towers, one for each of its traditional clan districts, and for its covered wind-and-rain bridges over the stream. Both are defining features of Dong architecture. On the map, the clan quarters appear as closely packed groups of buildings, and the bridges mark the points where the two sides of the valley meet.
A Zhaoxing map poster is very different from a city map. It shows a settlement shaped entirely by its valley, with water running through the middle and the hills pressing in. In monochrome, the dense village core and the open slopes make a strong contrast, suited to people who have travelled in Guizhou or who value traditional architecture.
A stream runs through the length of the village, and the houses line its banks. It forms the central axis of the poster from one side to the other.
The village is divided into five traditional districts, each with its own drum tower. On the map they appear as dense groups of buildings along the valley.
Covered wooden bridges cross the stream at several points. They are small on the map but mark the connections that hold the village together.
