Zhendong is a town in the northeastern part of Chongqing Municipality, a region of steep ridges, deep valleys and rivers flowing south toward the Yangtze. Flat land is scarce, so the built-up area follows the terrain. It stretches along a valley or a river instead of spreading out in a grid.
This is typical of settlements across the hills of eastern Sichuan and Chongqing. Towns grow along the few level corridors available, and farmland is cut into terraces on the slopes.
