Zhigulëvsk lies on the right bank of the Volga in Samara Oblast, where the Zhiguli Hills rise directly from the water. From above, the town stretches in a narrow band between the river and the wooded slopes, and its streets follow the few pieces of level ground. Across the water are the dam and reservoir near Tolyatti.
The town grew in the twentieth century around oil extraction and the building of the large hydroelectric dam on the Volga. Its setting is the main draw: the Zhiguli Hills and the Samarskaya Luka national park, which covers the forested land within the Volga's great bend, are among the best-known landscapes along the river.
