Zhutuo is a town in the Yongchuan district of Chongqing, on the Yangtze River in the hilly country west of the main city. Its riverside position made it a stopping point for boats travelling between Chongqing and the towns upstream in Sichuan. The oldest part of town still sits close to the water, with lanes and steps leading down to the bank.
On the map the river dominates. The Yangtze crosses the frame as a broad band, the old town forms a small, dense cluster on its bank, and newer streets spread inland along the roads toward Yongchuan.
