Zhuyi is in eastern Chongqing, in the mountainous region around the Yangtze and its Three Gorges. The land here is almost entirely slope. On a map the town squeezes its streets onto whatever level ground is available, and roads zigzag uphill in switchbacks. Contour-heavy terrain surrounds the settlement on all sides.
Since the Three Gorges Dam raised the level of the Yangtze, many towns in this region have been rebuilt higher up the valley sides. That is one reason so many of their streets are stacked in terraces and connected by winding roads.
