Southern highway axis
The main road from Baghdad runs through the town from north to south, and the densest streets cluster along it, giving the map a strong central spine.

Al Maḩmūdīyah Map Poster & Print
Al Maḩmūdīyah lies on the flat alluvial plain south of Baghdad, in the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates. The town grew along the main road running south from the capital toward Hillah, and on a map its streets form a dense core around that route, with newer blocks spreading outward on either side.
Water shapes the surrounding land. A network of irrigation canals and drainage channels runs across the fields, many of them straight lines drawn by engineers, others older and more sinuous. Palm groves and orchards fill the spaces between the canals, and the pattern of plots gives the edges of the town a finely divided texture.
The area has long served as a farming and market centre for the villages around it, and it remains closely linked to Baghdad by road. An Al Maḩmūdīyah map poster records a town shaped by the logic of irrigation, where every road and field is laid out in relation to water.

Irrigation canals
Straight canals and smaller ditches cut across the surrounding farmland, forming long parallel lines and right angles that frame the built-up area.
Farmland edges
Beyond the town, fields and palm groves divide the land into narrow plots, a fine-grained pattern that contrasts with the denser streets at the centre.
