The valley strip
The built-up area stretches along the valley in a long, narrow band. Its main streets run parallel to the railway and the through road instead of spreading out in a ring.

Arai Map Poster & Print
Arai lies in the south of Niigata Prefecture, on the edge of the Takada plain where it narrows towards the mountains. It was once a city in its own right and is now part of Myōkō. From above, the town runs in a north–south strip along the valley floor. Rail, road and river run side by side, and paddy fields fill the flat ground around the houses.
This is heavy snow country. Winters here are long, and the mountains to the southwest, including Mount Myōkō, draw skiers and hot-spring visitors to the wider municipality. The town itself is practical and linear. Its streets are arranged around the railway station and the old route linking the Japan Sea coast with the Nagano highlands.
An Arai map poster captures a very Japanese kind of landscape: a narrow band of settlement, a careful patchwork of fields, and forested slopes starting where the flat land ends. The shape is simple and elongated. On the page it reads almost like a line drawing of a valley.

Paddy field grid
Around the town, rice paddies form a fine grid of small rectangles. Irrigation channels and farm lanes add a quiet, regular texture to the flat ground.
Mountain edge
To the west and south, the flat land gives way to forested slopes. The street pattern thins out there, and the map shifts from dense lines to open space.
