Ciudad Vieja lies in the Sacatepéquez department of Guatemala, a short distance from Antigua, in a valley surrounded by volcanic slopes. Its name, the old city, recalls its history: this area was the site of Santiago de los Caballeros, the Spanish colonial capital destroyed in 1541 by a mudflow from the Volcán de Agua.
After that disaster the capital was moved to the site of present-day Antigua, and the town that remained kept the name. On the map, Ciudad Vieja has a grid of streets on the valley floor, with the land rising steeply toward the volcano to the south.
