Dūmā Map Poster
Dūmā lies a short distance northeast of Damascus, in the agricultural belt known as the Ghouta. This band of orchards and irrigated fields grew up around the Barada basin at the edge of the desert. From above, the town is a dense core of streets surrounded by the fine, irregular plots that have fed the capital for centuries.
It is the largest town of Eastern Ghouta and has long served as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding villages. The town was badly damaged during the Syrian war. For many people who have left, the street plan now carries memories of places that no longer look the way they did.
