De kaart

Gohyakkoku Map Poster & Print

Gohyakkoku is in the town of Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture, on the broad plain that runs from the Sea of Japan coast up towards the Northern Alps. The name, literally "five hundred koku", refers to the old koku measure of rice, which fits the landscape. On the map, the town is a small cluster of streets set within a patchwork of paddy fields.

A local railway line runs through, and the settlement has grown around its station. The streets are narrow and fairly regular, typical of rural Japanese towns. Farmhouses, often surrounded by windbreak trees, are scattered across the fields. To the east the plain rises towards the Tateyama mountains, a major range in the Japanese Alps.

A Gohyakkoku map poster captures a very Japanese kind of place: a dense core near the station, a rail line crossing the frame, and a wide surrounding grid of field boundaries and farm roads. In black and white, the paddy pattern becomes a fine, almost textile texture around the town.

Station-centred town

The built-up area gathers around the railway station. The line itself cuts across the plain and gives the composition a clear diagonal.

02

Paddy field grid

Rectangular rice fields cover the surrounding land. Their boundaries and farm roads form a fine, regular pattern that fills the poster's edges.

03

Scattered farmsteads

Individual farmhouses dot the plain outside the town. They add small points of detail across the open agricultural landscape.
