Guastatoya is the capital of El Progreso department in eastern Guatemala, lying beside the Atlantic highway that runs from Guatemala City toward the Caribbean coast. The town occupies part of the Motagua valley, one of the driest landscapes in the country, where thorn scrub and cactus cover the hills.
