Foothill edge
Where the valley meets the San Bernardino Mountains, the grid gives way to winding roads and open slopes. The line between suburb and wild land is clear on the map.

Highland Map Poster & Print
Highland lies on the eastern side of the San Bernardino Valley in Southern California, where the valley floor starts rising toward the San Bernardino Mountains. From above, the city is a mostly regular street grid that grows looser and more irregular as it reaches the foothills. The mountains form a sharp, wild edge to the north.
The broad, sandy channel of the Santa Ana River wash runs along the southern side. On a map it appears as a wide pale ribbon, far wider than the actual flow of water in most seasons. The area once had extensive citrus groves, and Highland was incorporated as a city in 1987 after decades of steady residential growth.
A Highland map poster places a planned Southern California grid between two strong natural forms: steep mountain slopes on one side and an open riverbed on the other. The contrast gives the composition clear structure, and the curving streets at the foothill edge add a lively, looser texture.

Santa Ana River wash
The broad, braided riverbed runs along the south of the city. It is a wide, pale band on the poster that separates Highland from the neighbouring communities.
Valley grid
On the flatter ground, streets follow a steady rectangular pattern. The regular blocks provide a calm backdrop to the more dramatic terrain at the city's edges.
