The estuary
Rivers meet the sea beside the city, creating a large open water area that shapes the old centre and gives the poster a strong focal point.

Ilhéus Map Poster & Print
Ilhéus lies on the coast of southern Bahia, where several rivers meet the Atlantic in a wide estuary. From above, the old centre sits on a peninsula between the river and the sea, with beaches extending along the coast and green hills rising inland.
For much of the twentieth century, the city was the centre of Brazil's cocoa trade, and the wealth of that era can still be seen in its historic buildings. The writer Jorge Amado, who grew up in the region, set his novel Gabriela, Cravo e Canela here.
An Ilhéus map poster reveals the balance of water and land: the estuary with its bridge, the dense old town, and the long beach roads to the south. The São Sebastião Cathedral stands near the waterfront in the historic centre.
